What Is Your Home Telling You About Yourself?

Our controlled environment speaks volumes about us whether we want to admit it or not.

So what does your home say about you or better yet, what is your home telling you about yourself?

  • Is it cluttered?

  • Is it not well put together?

  • Does it not reflect who you truly are?

  • Is it just a plain hot mess?

Now take a look at yourself.

Are you all over the place running around tired and anxious like a chicken without a head?  Are you being intentional with how you dress or are you walking around outside with your pajamas and slippers thinking you look cute?  Have you grown or transformed into a better version of yourself yet your home isn't reflecting who you have become?  Have you ended a toxic relationship yet there are items in your home that carry memories of that relationship?  Are you a newlywed yet your home doesn't reflect that new chapter in your life?

I can go on and on, but I'm sure you get my point.

I know for myself, that whenever my anxiety is through the roof, my house is also a mess.  What suffers is my home, especially the laundry.  I'm the queen of letting clean laundry sit on the bench in our bedroom for weeks without putting them away - a clear sign that I'm all over the place. It drives my OCD husband crazy because he does the laundry and only asks that I fold it and put it away (I know, I'm bad). Now grant it, I'm one that can live with a little bit of clutter since we have 4 kids - clutter is unavoidable, but when it becomes over powering to the point where I can't find shit, I know there's an underlying issue at hand.

Most recently, the clean clothes sat on the bench for a good two months.  The whole Summer to be exact!  Embarrassing, but true!  But I can tell you this.  This Summer was the first time that I was working for myself full time and to add to the madness of getting accustomed to being a full time entrepreneur, the kids were also home from school for the entire Summer and not at camp so I was juggling my biz and keeping them entertained (not easy - I frankly don't know how home school moms with businesses do it).  I was exhausted to say the least and my home reflected how defeated I was feeling.  I did eventually sign them up for camp in August because I was literally losing my shit.  I'm not kidding.

Our controlled environment speaks volumes about us whether we want to admit it or not. So what does your home say about you or better yet, what is your home telling you about yourself? Is it cluttered? Is it not well put together? Does it not reflec…

So I get it, but I also get how important it is to take a look at your space to see how it's mirroring you and your lifestyle.

Is it painting the picture of who you truly are?

Now I don't want to hear the excuses like the one of not having enough time to focus on your home because we make time for what's important to us - you mean to tell me that if someone gifted you Beyonce floor seat tickets, you wouldn't make time to go? I thought so.

“I don't have money” isn't an excuse either because if you're following me on Instagram, you know that I'm always sharing gems on how to decorate on a dime.  Plus, we make shit happen whenever we want to make shit happen.  Like that time you bought another bag or pair of shoes that you somehow convinced yourself that you needed.  So I don't want to hear the excuses because quite frankly, I've heard them all.

When it comes down to it, we will make time for what we feel is important and we will move mountains to afford things that we want, but don't necessarily need.

What most of us don't realize is that having a home that truly represents who we are and is free of clutter, is a necessity and not just a fad or a want.

Having a beautiful home (whatever that means to you) should be a priority.  Your mental health depends on it.

I truly, in every bone in my body, believe this to be true.  I'm a true testament of this.  Take a read at mental health journey and how I became an Interior Decorator here.

Now back to last month, I had to ask myself these same hard questions and once I did, I got my ass in gear and started organizing like I was Martha Stewart on meth.  Not sure if it was all of the retrogrades and eclipses and God knows what else was going on up in the cosmos this Summer, but I was a hot mess and when I'm a hot mess, things don't go well (ask my husband and kids - they'll tell you).

So I took my ass on over to the discount store (Lot Less of course because you guys know how much I love me some Lot Less) and bought a bunch of closet organizers and organized the shit out of me and my daughter's closet.  I purged, donated and purged some more until everything was in it's place.  Let me tell you that my anxiety went from a 20 to a 3.  Not to mention, I was full of energy and my creativity was finally back in full effect and I know for a fact that this was all a result of clearing my space of what was no longer serving me and bringing in order.

So I say this all to say, be mindful of this question: What Is Your Home Telling You About Yourself?

Take a look at your home and see if it's truly a reflection of who you are and how you feel about yourself and if it is, then you go girl!  But if it's not, do something about it!  Because a well put together home will help to put the pieces of yourself back together.  I'm living proof of that.
