Finally Get Unstuck: Learn How To Choose The Right Size Rug

Choosing the right size rug for your room can be confusing.  I get it.Not to mention, there are so many rug sizes out there to choose from (4x6, 5x7, 8x10 and the list goes on and on).  You just never know what is the right size rug for your space.  So how do you choose the right size rug?I'm going to break it down to you so you get it and can finally buy that rug you've been eyeing for a hot minute whether you're looking to shop at Rugs USA, Flor or whatever other store you're looking into.My trick is that you don't need to buy a large enough rug for your entire room.  No, you just need to concentrate on the space that you are decorating.For example, let's say you're working on decorating your living room, but you also have an eating area in the same space (this is for all you living in a small space), your only focus is going to be your living room area (couch, love seat and coffee table) and nothing else.  That's the beauty of area rugs, they are not only meant to warm up a space, but they also help to define a space (aka create different zones in a room).  That's why you tend to see a few area rugs in living rooms (one for the actual living room area, another for the reading area and if you have an eating area or home office - one for those too).To give you a better idea of what I mean, think of these specific areas when looking to choose the right size rug for your room:

• The seating area in your living room
• The eating area in your dining room
• Where your bed is located in your bedroom (aka the sleeping area)

So you're not factoring in your floor lamp in your living room, bart cart in your dining room or the dresser in your bedroom when thinking of what size rug will work in your room.  You're just focusing on a specific area of your room and nothing more.Doesn't the fact that you are now looking for a rug to fill up a smaller area in your room make things more manageable?  I think so.Now that we've figured that out, I like to make sure that the rug will allow for the legs of the furniture to sit on top of the rug (I like to aim for all four legs - front and back - but if that's not possible, then at least aim for the front legs of your furniture).  An example of when only the front legs of the furniture need to sit on top of the rug is when your couch is up against a wall,  since getting a larger rug only for the sake of all four feet of your sofa to sit on top of your rug, would be a waste of your money).Next, I like to bust out my painter's tape to help me figure out a visual template for the size rug that I'm going to choose for the space.  Not sure where I'm going with this?  Then click here to read this post where I share how I use painter's tape to help me choose the right size rug every time (without fail).  I'm going to warn you now, the pics are cheesy and old, but the point is that the tip is on point, even after all this time.Oh and one more thing that I'd like to share for those looking to choose a rug for a dinning room is that you want to make sure that your rug is large enough so that all four legs of your chairs sit on top of the rug (including when someone pulls out the chair to sit on it).  Nothing looks cornier than a rug, not being big enough to accommodate the table AND chairs.Now the only thing left to do is for you to bust out your measurement tape to measure the space you just taped up so you can go and finally buy the perfect rug for your space.  In case you didn't use the painter's tape trick, then simply measure the seating area (or eating/sleeping area) and use that number (plus a few inches - about 6) to search for a rug.  For example, let's say that your couch. love seat and coffee table (seating area in your living room) measures 25 square feet (5 feet long and 5 feet wide),  then you know that you will have to find a rug that's at least 6x9 so that all of the furniture pieces can sit on top of the rug with a little room to spare.

 You'll notice that with the 8x10 rug, it allows for people to pull out the ottomans and use them to sit down while still being on top of the rug.  This can't happen with the 4x6 rug.See the difference?
